How to get Google reviews?

Caleb Myers, Co-founder, Chief Sales Officer

Ask for a Google review after a job they liked, once, in their language, with a short link. Do not hover with a tablet. Do not pay for reviews. A useful review names the work and the town so the next stranger can tell what you do. That is how you get Google reviews. Not a campaign. A habit at the door.

When should you ask for a Google review?

Ask the same day a job went well, while they still remember the work. Not before you finish. Not two weeks later in a newsletter. The window is the handshake at the door, the walk back to the truck, the "you're all set" text.

If they are upset, fix the job. A review is not how you paper over a miss.

How do you ask without feeling cheap?

You ask once, in their language, with a short link, then you stop. "If this was useful, would you mind a Google review? Here is the link." That is a request. A tablet shoved across the counter while you watch is an ambush.

Write the ask in the words your shop actually uses. A clinic does not talk like a roofing crew. Send the link by text if that is how you already talk to them. Do not make them search your name, pick a location, and hunt a button.

If they say not today, thank them. Do not follow up three times. One ask is respect. Three is a collection agency.

What makes a Google review useful?

A useful Google review names the work and the town. The next person, and Google, can tell what you do. "Replaced the furnace in [town] on a Thursday and left the basement clean" is a fact. "Best ever!!!" is noise.

You may say what helps: the job, the place, whether they would call again. You may not write it for them. If you type the words, it is your review wearing their name.

This sits on your Google Business Profile. Hours, category, and photos still have to be true. Reviews cannot rescue a listing that says you are open when the door is locked.

Should you pay for Google reviews?

You should not pay for Google reviews. Not a discount, not a gift card, not a raffle tied to a star. Google says not to. The next stranger can smell it. A bought five-star does not make the phone ring for the right job. It makes a listing that looks rented.

Review software that filters unhappy people to a private form and happy people to Google is a gate. We will not run that. If the work was bad, that belongs in public too, with a grown-up reply.

How do you know the reviews are working?

Reviews are working when a stranger can tell what you do, and some of them call because of it. Ask new customers how they found you. If they say Google and mention a note about the actual job, the listing is doing work.

A count on a screenshot is not the job. Recency is. Ten specific notes from this year beat a wall of praise from a different owner, in a different decade.

People also ask AI who to call nearby. Specific reviews help that door too. That is a different question, answered in how to show up when people ask AI.

Who we are is on About. We will not invent a review count we did not earn.

How to ask for a Google review

One honest ask after a good job beats a month of review software.

  1. Wait until the job is done and they are glad.
  2. Ask once, in the words they use, that same day.
  3. Send the short Google review link. Do not make them hunt the profile.
  4. Walk away. No tablet at the elbow.
  5. When a review lands, reply like an adult within a week.

Questions people ask

How do I get Google reviews?

You get Google reviews by asking a real customer after a job they liked, once, with a short link they can tap on their phone. Ask in the words they use. Do not read a script. Do not stand over them. The review lives on your Google Business Profile, so the link should open that listing's review form, not a third-party survey. If they say no, thank them and stop. Volume that comes from pressure is not a review. It is a hostage note Google will eventually notice.

When should I ask for a Google review?

Ask the same day the job went well, while the work is still in their body. A plumber who just fixed the leak. A clinic that got them in this week. A shop that found the part. Waiting two weeks turns the ask into a marketing email they will ignore. Do not ask before the work is done. Do not ask in the middle of a complaint. If they are unhappy, fix the job first. A review is a receipt, not a bandage.

Is it okay to offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Paying, discounting, or raffling a review is against Google's rules and it reads as a bribe to the next stranger. A gift card for honest feedback is still a payment. If you want to be generous, be generous without tying it to a star. Ask because the work was good. If the work was not good, do not ask. We will not sell you a review-gating tool that hides the bad ones. That is a lie with a login.

What should a Google review say?

A useful Google review names the work and the town. They replaced the water heater on Tuesday in your town and showed up when they said. That tells Google, and a person, what you do. Amazing with four marks tells nobody anything. You can mention what to ask for: the job, the place, whether they would call you again. You cannot write the review for them. If you put words in their mouth, you are the author, and that is a fake.

How many Google reviews do I need?

Enough that a stranger scrolling the listing sees recent, specific notes from real jobs, not a pile from 2019 and silence. There is no honest number that unlocks the map pack. Ten specific reviews beat two hundred that all say great service. Recency matters more than a vanity total. We will not quote a ranking guarantee against a review count. Watch whether new customers mention Google when they call. That is the proof that counts.

What if I get a bad Google review?

Reply in public like an adult, in a week, not a month. Thank them for saying it. If the job was yours to fix, say you will, and do it. Do not argue the star. Do not drag a private fight into the listing. The next stranger is reading how you behave when it is ugly. A calm reply to a fair complaint is often more useful than another five-star line. Fake positive reviews to drown it out will cost you the listing.

Can I delete a Google review I do not like?

You can flag a review that is spam, or that is clearly about a different business, through Google's tools. You cannot delete a true complaint because it stung. Trying to bury it with a lawyer letter or a fake account is how listings get suspended. If it is about you, answer it. If it is a duplicate or a bot, flag it and wait. Patience is part of owning a public listing.
